The washing machine buying guide: capacity, spin and quiet running
The right washing machine quietly saves you time, water and electricity. The wrong one announces every cycle to the whole house. Here's what to weigh up.
Capacity: bigger isn't always better
- 7 kg: couples and small flats
- 8 kg: small families, occasional bulky loads
- 9 kg+: larger families, bedding and towels in one go
Spin speed and drying
Higher spin speeds (1400 rpm) extract more water, so clothes dry faster afterwards. If space is tight, a washer-dryer combo handles both in one drum — just expect smaller dry loads.
Noise and vibration
Look for inverter motors and a wash noise rating around 52 dB or lower if the machine sits near living spaces. A sturdy, level installation matters just as much as the spec.
