Choosing the right rug: size, material and where it goes
Rugs do quiet, heavy lifting: they define zones, soften acoustics and add warmth underfoot. The most common mistake is simply buying one that's too small.
Get the size right
- Living room: front legs of all sofas should sit on the rug
- Dining: chairs should stay on the rug even when pulled out
- Bedroom: a runner each side, or a large rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed
Match material to traffic
Wool is durable, naturally stain-resistant and ages beautifully — ideal for living rooms. Synthetic piles are budget-friendly and easy to clean, great for hallways and kids' spaces.
Mind the pile height
Low, flatweave piles suit high-traffic and under-door clearance. Plush shag feels luxurious but needs more upkeep and won't sit flat under heavy furniture.
